Women’s Tennis Set to Host 25th Annual Cissie Leary Invitational Tournament
PHILADELPHIA CREAM – The University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team will host the 25th Cissie Leary Memorial Invitational this weekend, starting Friday, September 22 and running through Sunday, September 24. For the second year in a row, the tournament format will not look the same. There will be no parentheses.
About the Cissie Leary invite
First played in 1997, the Cissie Leary Invitational honors the memory and legacy of Cissie Leary, head coach of women’s tennis at Penn from 1977 to 1996. She enjoyed 16 winning seasons in charge of the Rouge et Bleu, compiling a career record of 229-119. In 1995, his team was 16-7 overall and 6-1 in the Ivy League to earn a trip to the NCAA East Regional. Leary died in November 1996 following a long battle with scleroderma, and this tournament has been held in her honor every year since.
The full schedule for tomorrow’s action will be released in the morning, but play is expected to start at 9.30am.
Participants in this year’s two invitational Ivy teams, Columbia and Princeton, a pair of schools from Philadelphia, Drexel and Temple, and Richmond and Delaware complete the list.
The weekend action will take place at the Hamlin and Hecht Tennis Centers.
