What is happening

The MCDAC will meet on June 15The Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition meets the third Wednesday of each month at 8 a.m. in person at the Metropolis City Hall council chambers and also via Zoom. Meetings are open to the public. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, June 15. MCDAC is a group of volunteers committed to providing leadership, education and resources to build and support communities of informed citizens who make healthy and safe choices by reducing substance abuse. Allied/Honeywell pensioners meetingAllied/Honeywell retirees will meet at 7 a.m. on Monday, June 6 at the Waffle Hut, just off Exit 3 in Paducah.

First Missionary Baptist Church Hosts Friends and Family Day

First Missionary Baptist Church, 413 W. Seventh St., Metropolis, will celebrate Pentecost/Friends and Family Day on Sunday, June 5 at 11 a.m. A light lunch will be served at the family life center of the church after the morning service. Dr. Orlando McReynolds is the pastor. All are welcome.

The historical society meets on Monday

The Massac County Historical Society will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, June 6 at the Elijah P. Curtis Home, 405 Market St., Metropolis. Plans for the company’s 4th of July celebration event will be discussed. All members, and anyone interested in history, are welcome to attend.

Caregiver support group meets on June 14The Season of Honor: Caring for the Caregiver Support Group for those caring for a loved one will meet on Tuesday, June 14 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Baptist Health Paducah in Classroom A, located between buildings from Doctors 1 and 2. Cache hosting a fishing clinic

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is hosting a series of free catch-and-release clinics for youth in the Cache River State Natural Area at the Barkhausen-Cache River Wetlands Center. Clinics will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursdays, June 9, June 30, July 7 and July 21. The clinics are aimed at children 16 and under, but anyone interested in learning basic fishing skills can attend. Parents and other adults are not required to have a fishing license to help during this program. Instructors will present information about fish and other aquatic life; fishing rules and regulations; and basic instructions for baiting a hook, knotting and casting, tactics for catching fish and how to handle and release fish. Participants can bring their own gear or will be provided with rods, reels, bait and tackle for 90 minutes of catch and release fishing. Register in advance by calling 618-657-2064.

Cache holding initiation to orienteeringCache River State Natural Area will host an Introductory Orienteering Workshop from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, June 11 at the Barkhausen-Cache River Wetland Center. The workshop will introduce the basic concepts of orienteering to children and adults: how to use a compass, measure distances with paces and run an orienteering course. Participants will be provided with the use of a compass and course map and will practice their new skills along a course at Egret Slough. For more information, call 618-657-2064.

MCHS announces summer camp datesMassac County High School will host three sports camps this summer. The Patriot Boys’ Basketball Camp will run June 6-9 from 9-11:30 a.m. daily for incoming students in grades two through five and 12:30-3 p.m. for incoming students from sixth to ninth grade. The cost of the camp is $40 per child. Additional campers from the same family will pay $25. Campers receive training in a variety of sports, including baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, and cheerleading. The Lady Patriots Girls’ Basketball Camp for incoming third through ninth graders will be held July 5-8, 9-11:30 a.m. daily. The cost of the camp is $35 per child. Additional campers from the same family will pay $20. Lawyer at the Library coming to MetropolisThe Lawyer at the Library program will be offered at the Metropolis Public Library, 317 Metropolis Street, from 3 to 5 p.m. on Mondays, June 6, June 20, July 11 and July 25. There are no fees. Pre-registration is required. Entrants must reside in Alexander, Jackson, Johnson, Massac, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Union, or Williamson counties, and must bring all documents relating to their legal case, if applicable. Amateur radio operators gather for breakfast

The Massac County Amateur Emergency Service, part of the Massac County Amateur Radio Club, holds its weekly breakfast meetings at 10 a.m. Saturdays at Yesterday’s, 310 W. 10th St., Metropolis. The next meeting is Saturday June 4th. Tests are also available on Saturday mornings. All amateur radio operators or any member of the public who would like to learn more about the subject of amateur radio are invited. For more information, call 270-816-5551.

Brookport plans reunion of all classesA meeting of all class secretaries for the Brookport All Class Reunion will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 5 at Harry Statham Gymnasium. Those attending the July 1-2 meeting are asked to send their reservation forms to Alumni President Larry Fugate at 6710 SUS 45 Rd., Brookport IL 62910 as soon as possible. Kincaid Mounds support organization meets June 8The Kincaid Mounds Support Organization will meet at noon on Wednesday, June 8 at the Fort Massac State Park Visitor Center. The group meets on the second Wednesday of each month when weather permits. Locations are subject to change. Anyone interested in history is invited to attend. Massac County Amateur Radio Club Meets June 15

The Massac County Amateur Radio Club will hold its official month at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 15 at the club headquarters, 300 W. 10th St., Metropolis. The club meets on the third Wednesday of the month. All radio amateurs are invited. Call 270-816-5551.

American Legion Post 306 Meeting June 9

Metropolis American Legion Post 306 holds its monthly membership meetings at 6 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month. The next meeting will be on Thursday June 9th. The position is located at 321 Market St. in Metropolis.

Dates for Southern Seven’s WOW Health Screenings SetThe Southern Seven Health Department, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Public Health, will be hosting Wellness on Wheels health screening events on Wednesday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Happy Hearts Senior Center, 711 Market St., Metropolis; Wednesday, June 15, 1:30-4 p.m. in front of Brookport City Hall; Wednesday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Métropolis Fire Department; and Wednesday, July 13, from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in front of Big John Grocery.
