United States baseball team builds list of Tokyo Olympic qualifying training camps – NBC Chicago
The United States men’s baseball team will have another opportunity to qualify for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, and on Sunday the team unveiled their list of training camps ahead of the Americas qualifying tournament.
The United States, which won the 2017 World Baseball Classic, were fortunate enough to qualify for the Olympics in the Premier12 tournament in 2019, but were unable to secure a spot in the squad of six teams in Tokyo.
The Americas eight-team qualifier kicks off May 31 in Florida. The winning team will clinch a spot in the Olympic field, while the second and third place teams will get one last chance at qualifying for the qualifying tournament in Mexico next month.
The team’s training camp roster includes several top Major League stars, including longtime Orioles and Cardinals wide receiver Matt Wieters. Former Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves outfielder Matt Kemp is also on the list, as is 10-year MLB veteran Logan Forsythe.
The US squad also includes several former MLB players with ties to the Chicago Cubs and White Sox. That squad includes relief pitcher David Robertson, who was a member of the 2017 WBC winning US team. Robertson played three seasons with the White Sox, appearing in 153 games and posting a 3.28 ERA. He recorded 84 saves and struck out 208 batters in 159 innings.
Pitcher Edwin Jackson and outfielder Jon Jay, both of whom have the distinction of playing for the Cubs and White Sox, were also on the list for the qualifying tournament.
Former White Sox third baseman Todd Frazier, who hit 56 home runs in two seasons with the Pale Hose between 2016 and 2017, is also on the list, as is former Cubs wide receiver Tim Federowicz, who served as backup receiver for the team. and appeared in 17 games during the club’s winning 2016 World Series season.
An Illinois native couple are also on the qualifying list, with Oak Lawn-born pitcher Marc Rzepczynski and Park Ridge-born Luke Williams making the cut.
