The San Sebastian line-up includes titles by Sebastián Lelio and Hong Sang-soo | New
Films by Sebastián Lelio and Hong Sang-soo are among the new titles selected to compete at this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival (September 16-24).
Lelio, of which A fantastic woman won the Oscar for best foreign language film in 2017, made its competition debut in San Sebastián with Wonder. Adapted from the novel by Emma Donoghue sand set in a 19th century Irish town, it stars Florence Pugh, Ciarán Hinds, Tom Burke, Toby Jones and Niamh Algar.
Cannes and Berlin winner Hong San-soo will make his second appearance in the San Sebastian official selection (after Yourselves and yours in 2016) with Up / Up, about a middle-aged filmmaker.
Christophe Honoré returns to San Sebastian with winter boywhich follows a teenager in crisis following the death of his father and stars Paul Kircher, Vincent Lacoste and Juliette Binoche.
Also present in competition, Manuel Abramovich with pornomelancholy, about a sex influencer; Diego Lerman with The substitute, which follows a teacher in the suburbs of Buenos Aires; British immigration drama by Marco Martins Great Yarmouth provisional figures; and Laura Mora’s second feature The Kings of the worldabout five boys who live on the streets of Medellín.
The lineup also includes family dramas Still by Frelle Petersen, whose first feature film Uncle won the grand prize at the Tokyo Film Festival in 2019; Ulrich Seidl’s competitive debut in San Sebastian Sparta, which completes the diptych begun with the title of the Berlin competition Rimini (2022); and Petr Vaclav Il Boemoabout the prolific Italian opera composer Josef Myslivecek.
The competition will also present the first films of Genki Kawamura (hundred flowers) and Marianne Mathias (runner).
The Spanish titles to compete for the Golden Shell have already been announced.
