The Pall-Ex HGV Driver Program offers a first graduate – and here’s how you could join the company
A program launched to help tackle the shortage of truck drivers has delivered its first graduate
The Pall-Ex Warehouse to Wheels program was created to give warehouse workers the opportunity to progress into truck driver roles.
Like most haulage companies, Pall-Ex – which is the UK’s largest palletized goods network – has been hit by a shortage of drivers made worse by a combination of European drivers leaving the UK due to Brexit and Covid; lockdowns blocking heavy truck training courses; and older drivers leaving the company.
The first graduate of the Warehouse to Wheels program was Kirill Sapelkin, who started his journey with the Leicestershire-based logistics company in 2018 as a forklift driver.
His training was funded by Pall-Ex and he moved on to become one of its shunter drivers, responsible for managing and moving trailers at its hub in Ellistown, near Coalville.
He has now passed his Certificate of Professional Competence as a Driver (CPC) and obtained his HGV C licence, and is qualified to drive HGVs up to 44 tonnes on the road.
A Pall-Ex spokeswoman said: “This provides Kirill with better career opportunities and increases his earning potential through obtaining a highly sought-after qualification.
“Therefore, Kirill’s progress also benefits Pall-Ex, as he now has access to another truck driver at a time when such skilled workers are so scarce.”
Mr Sapelkin said: “The Warehouse to Wheels program has given me a great opportunity to advance my career and I would recommend it to anyone considering furthering their career.
“I am delighted that the managers at Pall-Ex believed in me and gave me this opportunity and I look forward to taking the next steps.”
Pall-Ex operates a hub and spoke network with more than 90 independent carriers that drop off and collect shipments from central hubs.
Pall-Ex’s Director of Operations, Paul Pegg, oversaw the implementation of the Warehouse to Wheels program.
He said: “We are really proud of Kirill and his progress through the Warehouse to Wheels program.
“Kirill has excelled in every role he has had with us here at Pall-Ex, and I have no doubt that he will continue to be an integral part of the team now as a driver.
“Our Warehouse to Wheels program is designed to support staff and help them reach their full potential, while helping the company develop a valuable and skilled workforce. So we’re really excited to see the first graduate among many others to begin his driving journey.”
