Fixation: Durham vs. Derbyshire Falcons
Location: Emirates Riverside, Chester-le-Street
Dated: Friday, July 9, 2021
Start time: 6.30 p.m.
What is the truth ?
Durham is currently fourth in the North group with three games to go, occupying the final qualifier on net run rate. However, having lost four of their last five games, the club run the risk of being overtaken by the Birmingham Bears, Lancashire Lightning or the resurgent Northants Steelbacks.
Derbyshire, meanwhile, are last with three wins, seven losses and a tie to their name, and, seated four points off fourth place with just three games to go, needs nothing less than a small miracle for to qualify. The appointment of Matt Critchley as T20 captain yielded immediate results – a five-wicket win over the Birmingham Bears and a tie with Notts Outlaws – but the Falcons suffered a 14-point loss to Worcestershire in their last outing.
Due to the Covid-19 outbreak in the England White Balloon team, Durham will be without Ben Stokes and Brydon Carse, who have been called up as replacements. No Derbyshire player has been called up for an international assignment.
Who is in good shape?
Leus du Plooy and Luis Reece are Derbyshire’s top scorers with 348 and 343 points, respectively, in 11 innings. The former scored half a century (57 of 34 balls) in the Falcons’ victory over the Birmingham Bears, while Reece had scores of 51 and 39 in his two previous outings. Tom Wood has also impressed lately, posting shots of 63 and 46 against Birmingham and Worcestershire.
With the ball, George Scrimshaw was the star against Birmingham, taking 4 for 23, and has 14 wickets for the season and a saving of 7.41. Logan van Beek is Derbyshire’s leading teller with 15.
For Durham, meanwhile, Sean Dickson has stood out with the bat in their last two losses, scoring 35 points on 29 balls against Leicestershire and another 40 points against Northants. Matty Potts also contributed with a 40-26 non-ball against the Steelbacks in a reassuring display of mid-order depth. Cameron Bancroft remains Durham’s leading scorer with 246 points, but has passed 30 only once in his last five outings.
In addition to playing with the bat, Potts is also Durham’s main wicket-taker, with 13 under his belt.
