SWVA Summer Musical Games to Host Drum Corps International Competition in Salem
SALEM, Va. (WFXR) — After two years, the annual Southwest Virginia Summer Musical Games are back and home to four Drum Corps International (DCI) competition teams on Tuesday.
The Pride of Salem Band Boosters presents the Summer Music Games on Tuesday, August 2 at 7 p.m. at Salem Stadium located at 1008 Texas Street. DCI officials say the event starts at 7 p.m. with the first group kicking off at 7:15 p.m.
Recall group officials tell WFXR News that the event is the primary fundraiser for the Pride of Salem Marching Band. All proceeds from event advertising, sponsorships, donations and tickets are used to fund the Salem High School Band program.
Tickets cost between $25 and $35 and can be purchased online. The ticket price on the day of the event increases by $5.
Each corp consists of 30 to 135 members between the ages of 14 and 22, depending on their division, and participate in an 11-minute show that they spend all summer rehearsing, according to DCI officials.
The following corps will compete and perform encore exhibitions:
- Pacific Ridge – Diamond Bar, California
- Foals – Dubuque, Iowa
- Santa Clara Vanguard – Santa Clara, California
- carolina crown –Fort Mill, California
Drum Corps International carries the slogan “marching music major league” even though many people describe it as “a professional marching band”. To the average person watching a DCI performance, it may look like a marching band, but DCI bands only have brass, percussion, and a color guard. This means that wind instruments (saxophone, clarinet, flute, etc.) are not included.
