MOREHEAD, Ky. – Spring has arrived at Jayne Stadium as the Morehead State football program began spring training in 2022. Saturday was the fifth day of spring training and the first day of contact, and coach- chief Rob Tenyer seemed pleased with the competition on both sides of the ball for the Eagles.
“We have 86 guys here for Spring Prom this year and we have a lot to be excited about when it comes to depth. I really like where we are at so far,” Tenyer said.
This will be his tenth season as head football coach at Morehead State after serving as an assistant at MSU for 12 seasons.
One thing Coach Tenyer was happy about was the opportunity to play a Week 0 game.
“This year having this game means we’ll have an extra week of camp in the summer. School starts early here, and we normally don’t have that full camp. With all the decisions we’re going to have to make like in terms of As far as game time is concerned, this extra week will be huge for us.”
A key decision Tenyer will have to make is who will replace All-PFL First Team QB Marc Papas.
“We have three guys in Colin Parachek, Carter Cravenand Grady Cramer who all bring different skills to the table at quarterback. But, at the end of the day, one of those guys will have to be the one to step up and lead this team,” Tenyer said. take here.”
The offensive line was a positional group that Tenyer was also very excited about. Tenyer said he was confident in the “front nine” of this group, giving whoever could be the quarterback a sense of security in the backfield. OL tried hard to capture stunts and pass protection on Saturday.
Normally at the start of the season and especially in the spring, the defense will be a few steps ahead of the attack, but Tenyer said this year that is not the case.
“We have so many guys who know our stuff that the defense doesn’t have the same advantage at the start of this year. We were able to set up a ton of our offense – maybe even more than we should have – and really roll the ball towards the fall.”
Speaking of defence, the run defense seemed like a point of attention in the team’s training period, as the front seven blocked the run attack from the offense at the line of scrimmage at many times. Energy was high on the “blue side” during team times. A name to watch out for is David Faccoonwho apparently lived in the backfield on Saturday.
Tenyer was pleased with the tackling performance during a team spell where the offense tried to work on their screen game and quick passing game. On several occasions, the defensive backs were able to make perimeter plays and thwart the Eagles’ quick play.
A man the defense couldn’t stop on Saturday was returning wide receiver Thomas Campbell Clay, who, according to Tenyer, “had a really good day.” Campbell-Clay scored on a wheel drive for a team period and also caught a post drive for a big win.
After a 7-4 finish last season, the Morehead State football program has plenty to be excited about as it heads into the 2022 season. The Spring Game as well as Junior Day are scheduled for April 23 at the Jayne Stadium. Junior day begins at 9 a.m. ET, with the Spring Game kicking off at 2 p.m.
