Rochelle News-Leader | Golf: Thiravong wins 30th classic gold medal
Lady Hub senior Megan Thiravong adjusted on the fly as she worked with a new set of irons during the 30e Annual Gold Medal Classic at PrairieView Golf Club in Byron this past weekend.
With wind gusts reaching up to 45 miles per hour, approach shots proved difficult for many players, including Thiravong, who overcame both the weather and his new clubs to score consecutive laps of 81-78-159 to win the women’s championship flight. Thiravong beat local player Hui Chong Dofflemyer, who finished second with 168.
“It is an honor to compete with the women and to have my name engraved in the champion’s trophy for the 30th anniversary of the Gold Medal Classic,” said Thiravong. “I’m grateful to have competed with Hui Chong Dofflemyer and Joanna Sharp as they are fabulous models and women that I look forward to competing with in the future… This tournament has given me an idea of what I’m up to. have to work before this summer, especially iron precision and swing form. “
A four-year-old varsity player and IHSA State Championship qualifier for Rochelle Township High School, Thiravong will prepare to pass her talents on to Saginaw Valley State University next year. Thiravong’s offseason is well underway, with the 30e The Gold Medal Classic marks her first notable victory as she continues to prepare for college level. Thiravong has been active on the Prep Tour, recently taking third place in the Prep Tour event at Pontiac Elks with an 84. Megan’s younger sister, Ailani, also competed in the event, finishing sixth overall with a 87.
“I’ll be moving into my dorm in Michigan in August, which only allows me a few months of practice before training with my team,” Thiravong said. “In the future, my sister and I will participate in various tournaments like the Prep Tour tournament series. I hope she will surpass me soon as she will compete in the high school divisions as a sixth grader.
