Mia McCarthy (AUS) and Kael Walsh (AUS) secured their entry into the Rip Curl Rottnest Search via local trials. McCarthy placed second in practice and will compete after first place winner Felicity Palmateer withdrew due to injury. This will be the second time Walsh and McCarthy have competed in a CT event after their debut at the 2018 and 2017 Margaret River Pro events, respectively.
“I’m really happy to have the opportunity to compete in my second round of the Championship Tour,” said McCarthy. “I am honored to represent Western Australia. I can’t wait to get to beautiful Rottnest Island. This will actually be my first time surfing there and the first time since I was five, so I can’t wait to go.
Amuro Tsuzuki (JPN) continues to replace Lakey Peterson (USA), who retired with a back injury ahead of the Rip Curl Narrabeen Classic pres. by Corona.
Jacob Willcox (AUS) received the wildcard of the men’s event through the event’s title partner, Rip Curl, and will have another opportunity to compete with the world’s best surfers after his 17th place at Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro.
The holding period for the Rip Curl Rottnest Search presented by Corona begins on May 16 and ends on May 26. The event will be broadcast LIVE on WorldSurfLeague.com and the free WSL app. Also check local listings for coverage of WSL broadcast partners.
While Rottnest Island will remain open to visitors during the hosting of the event, spectators will not be allowed into Strickland Bay as it will be a broadcast-only event.
