Redbirds Close Out Competition at Illinois and Indiana
CHAMPAGNE, Ill. – Illinois State Athletics closed out competition at the Illini and Indiana Invitationals on Saturday, as four Redbirds and a relay team etched their names in the program’s record books with their performances.
IU 800M SQUAD
It was quite a weekend for the redshirt sophomore Rachel Hickey, which clinched the Illinois State all-time top 10 for the second day in a row. In a field of nearly 34 competitors, Hickey finished fourth in the women’s 800 with a new personal best of 2:07.36. Hickey now ranks No. 3 in school history in the event and she continues to hold the fourth fastest time in the Valley of the season.
In the male group, second year Riley Wells finished as the top Redbird, as he clocked 1:50.18 to tie a season best. Junior Joe Morrison finished just behind Wells at 1:50.27, who ranks No. 4 in the MVC.
ILLINI ACTION BY INVITATION
Participate in the women’s pole vault, second year Amni Austin clocked a new personal best of 3.88 m (12-8.75 ft) to tie for second. His rating ranks No. 6 in school history and No. 2 in the MVC for the season. Senior Ali Craonston finished behind Austin with a personal best of 3.73 m (12–2.75 ft), which ranks him 9th in school history.
Second year Joe Boyer had a solid performance in the throwing ring, finishing in the top 3 in both events he entered. In the shot put, Boyer threw a huge personal best 18.00 m (59-0.75 ft) to finish third. His throw ranks 6th in school history and is the MVC’s third best mark of the season. In addition to his shot put performance, Boyer also finished second in the discus throw with a throw of 50.08 m (164-3 ft).
The Redbird Men’s 4x400m Relay Team Junias Holmes Jr., Avery Lyons, Cecil Brownridge III and Brandon Gag took the victory in the relay event, posting a season best time of 3:09.54. That time ranks No. 1 in the MVC by nearly four seconds, ranks No. 7 in school history and No. 21 in the NCAA West Region.
Running the third leg of the 4x400m relay, Brownridge also won the men’s 400m with a time of 47.59, which now leads the MVC.
It was a windy day in the short sprints, as the Redbirds set or tied wind-assisted personal bests in four events:
Redbird’s first victory of the day came in the women’s 4x100m relay. The squad of The winters of Sa’Mone, Bri Bugs, madison saunders and Arianna Walker finished in 46.03 seconds. The men’s 4x100m relay team clocked a season best 41.05 to finish third.
First-year student Elijah Williams was crowned triple jump champion with a leap of 14.73 m (48-4 ft), a new personal best in all conditions.
Illinois State finished second in the men’s and women’s high jump competitions, sophomore Carly Tucker was the finalist for women. Tucker shot a personal best 1.70 m (5-7 ft) outdoors, which is tied for second most in the MVC of the season. On the men’s side, junior Cameron Gets placed second with a clearance of 2.05 m (6-8.75 ft).
For the second consecutive week, senior Logan Calvin won the men’s shot put by throwing 18.94 m (62–1.75 ft), his second-best performance of the outdoor season.
On the women’s side, second year Mye’Joi Williams set a best outdoor season in the shot put with a throw of 15.11 m (49-7 ft) to place third.
With the conclusion of the Illini and Indiana Invitationals, the Redbirds will focus on the Drake Relays and Clark Wood Invitational before wrapping up the regular season with a trip to Wisconsin.
