Ravindra Jadeja returns CSK captain to MS Dhoni
In an unprecedented turn of events, Ravindra Jadeja of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) handed over the team captain to MS Dhoni halfway through IPL 2022. The legendary batsman-wicketkeeper will take over on Sunday against SunRisers Hyderabad at Maharashtra Cricket Association in Pune. Stadium
An official statement from the franchise said the versatile player wanted to “focus and concentrate more on his game” and Dhoni agreed to the request. The statement said:
“Ravindra Jadeja has decided to relinquish the captaincy to focus more on his game and has asked MS Dhoni to lead CSK. MS Dhoni has agreed to lead CSK in the general interest and allow Jadeja to focus on his game.”
Dhoni stepped down from management just days before the opening of IPL 2022, allowing for what seemed like a natural transition into the all-rounder. He was celebrated for leaving behind a legacy of four IPL titles and a record winning percentage.
But the southpaw, leading a side missing bowling leader Deepak Chahar, oversaw CSK’s worst start to the IPL season. They stumbled to four straight defeats and could only win two games out of the next four. They are seeded ninth in the points table with a top-four qualification looking highly unlikely.
Ravindra Jadeja struggled for form in IPL 2022
The all-rounder, who has been one of the best players in the franchise for the past two years, has struggled for form with bat and ball. In eight matches, he scored just 112 points with an average and strike rate of 22.40 and 121.74 respectively. With the ball, he had five wickets at 42.60 runs each. The 33-year-old has also been criticized for not being as inspiring as his predecessor on the pitch.
Qualification seems impossible at this point, even for someone of Dhoni’s proven caliber and experience. But this development has also opened up the question of his heir again, making future matches even more interesting to watch.
