Match preview | DC United v Alianza FC
DC United will play their second game of the inaugural Capital Cup at Audi Field against Alianza FC on Sunday, July 11 at 5:30 p.m. EST. After winning their first game of the tournament against La Liga Deportiva Alajuelense on Wednesday, United, who are set to play a full-strength starting XI, can secure the Capital Cup championship with another victory on Sunday night.
In their match against Alajuelense on July 7, United found a late goal thanks to a Felipe Martins free kick to give them a 1-0 win. In a hotly contested affair which saw a heavily turned United side in their previous 7-1 win over Toronto FC, the home side were always able to create scoring chances throughout the game. Griffin Yow unleashed a shot from outside the box that headed for the lower right corner in the 37th minute, but was saved by the Alajuelense keeper. From the corner that followed, Joseph Mora placed well in the box, but his header was taken off the line by the goalkeeper. The two teams entered at half-time tied 0-0.
The only goal of the game was scored in the 87th minute when Felipe deftly rolled his free kick under Alajuelense’s jumping wall and into the lower left corner. United were solid defensively throughout the game and held on to keep their clean sheet clean and win 1-0.
Alianza FC was founded in 1958 and is based in San Salvador, El Salvador. The club have won 15 Primera División titles and a Copa Presidente. Alianza FC were also the first Salvadoran team to win the CONCACAF Champions Cup when they won the trophy in 1967. Sunday’s game will be the first-ever meeting between the two.
