La crosse celebrates at the annual banquet
ROCK – The University of Colorado lacrosse team got together Sunday morning at the Arrow Touchdown Club to celebrate not one, but two special groups of seniors as well as the past two seasons.
The Buffaloes were unable to celebrate their 2020 season due to the pandemic and therefore were unable to celebrate these seniors. This banquet allowed coaches, staff, team, parents and everyone else to celebrate both teams and all the seniors for all they have accomplished; not just in their final season but in their entire career at CU.
The Head Coach Ann Elliott Hidden greeted the crowd at the start of the banquet, talking about everything these groups of athletes had overcome, including the loss of a teammate, almost the loss of a second teammate and the hiatus of their final season. She also spoke about the resilience everyone has shown to get through it all together.
Whidden went on to speak about the 2021 season as well. This team went on to play in the championship game of the Pac-12 tournament and is the only team to play in all three conference title games since the Pac-12 began sponsoring women’s lacrosse.
After recapping the season, Whidden handed out awards to student-athletes won during the 2021 season (there has been no awards for the 2020 season as it was cut short after five games).
The first prizes were the All-Pac-12. Sadie Grozier, Julia Lisella and Katie Blanche received their first team awards and Charlie rudy received his second team honor. The members of the all-star team of the Pac-12 tournament, Grozier, Lisella and Devon bayer, came to the front to receive their awards and Lisella also earned her Pac-12 Defender of the Year honor.
Grozier and Lisella didn’t have much luck sitting down as they were called back to receive their IWLCA All-Region Second Team awards, which wrapped up the sports awards portion of the season.
Eliza cahill received the Pac-12 Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which is awarded to a senior Pac-12 graduate. She became the first Buff to win the award in the three years since the conference awarded her.
The program continued with the announcement of the Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll as 27 were named to the team (see link for full list). As a team, the Buffs won the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Team Award and 11 were named to the Academic Honor Roll: Bayer, Kasey Braun, Kate burnside, Cahill, Grozier, Bailey hawkins, Zoe Lawless, Liz phillips, Sabrina robbins, Rudy and Kate Blanche.
After the athletic and academic awards, each class received its award letter.
In a tradition for the lacrosse team, an underclassman has been chosen to speak about the seniors. Hawkins spoke about the Class of 2021 while Bayer spoke about the Class of 2020. Then Mindy Sclaro, the academic coordinator of the team, spoke about each of the seniors of the two classes.
The crowd was treated to the 2021 season highlights video at the end of the program.
