Hickory and the Franklin Boys Score Guerino Tournament Wins to Qualify for Championship Game
March 25—Four boys’ basketball games were played Thursday at the 23rd annual Buddy Guerino Underclassmen’s Basketball Tournament in Sharpsville.
Sharpsville and Hickory played in the Championship Bracket semi-finals while Farrell, Greenville and Mercer played in the Consolation Bracket quarter-finals.
The tournament ends on Saturday with the consolation and championship matches.
The following was reported to the Herald:
– Franklin 79, Sharpsville 29 – Franklin advanced to Saturday’s championship game with the win.
Damon Curry scored 16 points for the Knights, Johnathan Leccia scored 13, Jalen Wood contributed 12 points and Ethan Owens 11.
Sharpsville didn’t have a double-digit scorer.
Franklin will face Hickory in the championship game at 6:45 p.m. Saturday while Sharpsville will face Farrell in the consolation semifinals tonight.
– Hickory 47, Neshannock 42 – John Stephens scored 9 points as the Hornets advanced to Saturday’s championship game against Franklin.
Joey Warso (11 points) and Mike Sopko (10) scored in double figures for Neshannock, who fell in the consolation semifinals to face Laurel.
– Farrell 70, Greenville 32 – Danny Odem scored 13 points while Kylon Wilson and Juju Johnson added 11 apiece as the Steelers outscored the Trojans.
Nate Stuyvesant beat Greenville with 12 points.
Farrell advances to tonight’s consolation semifinals to face Sharpsville.
– Laurel 48, Mercer 45 (OT) – Laban Barker had 17 points and Gage Preisser had 16 as Laurel edged Mercer in overtime.
Jake Mattocks led Mercer with 17 points and Daemyn Mattocks scored 10.
Laurel advances to the consolation semi-finals to face Neshannock.
Farrell vs. Sharpsville, 6:30 p.m.
Laurel vs. Neshannock, 7:45 p.m.
Hickory vs. Mercer, 5:15 p.m.
Sharon vs. Central Valley, 9 p.m.
Note: All 4 matches will be played in the high school gymnasium.
