Fred Wellsby Junior Divot golf tournament sets six-course schedule – Abbotsford News
Calling all junior golfers. After missing a year due to COVID-19, the Optimist Fred Wellsby Divot Junior Golf Tournament returns in 2021. The 16 and under tournament has been an annual event for over 25 years.
This year, it takes place in six local courses from July 6 to 15.
The three age groups are 10 and under, 11 to 13 and 14 to 16 and golfers should be able to score 100 or better on a par three course. The 10 and under age group need only play nine holes and double pick up on seven of those nine holes.
“It’s a great introduction to tournament play and there are a lot of net and gross prizes so everyone has a chance to win a prize,” said tournament coordinator Glenda Standeven.
The trophies and medallions are sponsored by the Roy Gleig Memorial Fund. Roy was passionate about golf and the fund supports and encourages the love of the sport among local youth. The Chilliwack Optimist Club is a non-profit service club that helps children in need in our community.
“We have kids who used to golf in our tournaments and now bring their own kids to play,” said Standeven, who is also a life member of the Optimist Club. “We try to teach kids the rules of the tournament game while still allowing them to be kids and have fun.”
The registration fee is $ 20 per class and includes a treat.
To pre-register, email Standeven at [email protected] On tournament days, the registration desk opens at 11 a.m. and golfers tee off at noon for all events except invitation.
