FIA adds three new cities for upcoming Formula E season
Formula E and the FIA today released the provisional calendar for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship 2021/2022, with three new venues in a record-breaking season of 16 races spanning 12 cities on four continents.
The calendar was ratified following the FIA World Motorsport Council in Monaco, confirming the busiest electric racing season to date.
Starting at the end of January, the season opener will once again take place under the stars of Diriyah following the success of last season’s inaugural night race. The Formula E grid will then head to Mexico City before visiting the first of three new cities with Cape Town in South Africa – returning the FIA single-seater world championship to the country for the first time since the African Grand Prix. South 1993.
China then makes a welcome return to the Formula E calendar in March 2022 ahead of the events in Rome and Monaco, with racing in the Principality shifting from a biannual event to an annual event after the great success of the E-Prix. May and Monegasque accommodation.
Berlin, the only city to feature in every season, takes its familiar place on the calendar in May, followed shortly after by the second new location with Vancouver.
The race then heads to the Big Apple for a series of double heads starting with the New York E-Prix, before two races at ExCeL in London and a double-headed season finale in Seoul using a circuit incorporating the Olympic Stadium.
After two consecutive years of absence due to the global pandemic, Formula E plans a return of the Parisian race in 2023 for the arrival of the Gen3 cars of Formula E. The E-Prix of Paris will change to a format of biannual event, adapted to bring a new balance to the championship calendar. Each year of the race, Paris will host the Allianz E-Village, a celebration of electric mobility and a laboratory for innovative ideas in favor of clean mobility.
Alberto Longo, co-founder and deputy general manager of Formula E, said: “In the short history of Formula E, we have always sought to develop the championship and our reach. Next season should be another milestone for the series with a record number of races and incredible new cities supporting Formula E and our electric movement. Returning to race in South Africa, with players like Vancouver and Seoul, is a huge achievement for the series, in addition to expanding Monaco to an annual event. Like our last season with the Gen2 car, it promises to be one of the most exciting yet and will lay the groundwork for the all-new Gen3 era in season nine.
