The European juniors and juniors orienteering championships scheduled for the end of October in Hungary have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The competition was scheduled to take place in the Hungarian city of Salgótarján from October 23-26.

It has been canceled as coronavirus cases increase in the host country, with the organizing committee unable to guarantee the health of every participant.

Hungary recorded 916 cases of COVID-19 yesterday, a large increase from the 118 cases recorded on September 1.

In addition, an increasing number of federations cannot make it to the competition due to travel restrictions.

“We hope to be able to organize this event in one of the years to come, when the situation returns to normal.”

The Director General of the International Orienteering Federation, Tom Hollowell, also commented on the situation.

“The organizers have done a tremendous job trying to keep this event alive for the junior and youth athletes and I would really like to salute their work,” he said.
