For the first year, the sports department of the town hall of Bernay (Eure) offers everything a sports program during summer. “We tried to offer lots of collective games and different activities”, explains Gaëlle Sanchez, coordinator of the sports department. Alongside Victor and Valérie, the three sports educators supervise and animate the various activities distributed in Abbey Park. For the past few days, they have been joined by four young people from the National Universal Service (SNU) program. “All activities are free and without registration,” she says.
A sports program filled over a month
Ball games, ultimate, diabolo, badminton, but also Zumba, fitness and abs and buttocks classes and muscle toning, the activity program should appeal to everyone. “The goal is to provide games suitable for the whole family, continues Gaëlle Sanchez. If a family arrives with children, we must be able to offer games especially for them. Parents don’t have to play with children. We also have activities for them. This Friday afternoon, young and old met for a petanque tournament, with plastic balls. “We also have real pétanque boules,” she explains. This week, inflatable structures are installed in the park for two weeks. “Evening and morning classes, and the day on Saturday remain the most popular,” says Victor, one of the facilitators. There are many group classes, usually offered in gyms.
Depending on the weather, the three facilitators had to live with heat waves and then violent showers. “During the orienteering, we had rain. We had to stop quickly, ”says the coordinator of the sports department. Some days have few participants, but she remains optimistic about the future. “As it’s the first year, people don’t know yet,” she explains. Many people pass by, then stop to finally play with us. Unsurprisingly, Saturday attracts the most people.
