After being closed for the whole of 2021 to date, the indoor facilities at the Athlone Regional Sports Center will reopen in the coming weeks.

The center, off Ballymahon Road, said it was delighted to announce that its doors will reopen on June 7 to members who wish to use the gym and pool.

“The center closed its doors on December 31, after what has been our busiest December in our history,” director Liam Cunningham told the Independent from Westmeath.

“The fact that we were so busy in December gives us some optimism for the future.”

He said the facilities at the centre’s outdoor fitness park had been particularly welcome during the lockdown period.

“The outdoor fitness park has been a great resource, and many people have taken advantage of it very well, whether it is through the jogging tracks, the basketball court or the orientation area which is now also there. . “

The centre’s outdoor grounds, such as the five-a-side football pitches, will open from Monday, May 24, while the indoor pool and gym will reopen a fortnight later with the usual public health precautions in place. .

Liam said the reopening was an important moment for the center.

“You’re trying to rebuild a business that has been closed for ten out of the last fourteen months, and which presents its own challenges, but that’s good news.

“It’s positive for the staff and we are also looking forward to seeing all of our members and clients coming back as well,” he said.

Classes at the center will remain outdoors until restrictions are further relaxed.
