Another remarkable victory for Somba
DUNBOYNE AC’s Peter Somba made it two out of two in the Irish Life Dublin Race series by winning the Frank Duffy 10 Mile in Phoenix Park in 51 minutes and 14 seconds on Saturday.
However, second Josh O’Sullivan Hourihan (Donore Harriers), an international orienteer who knew the course particularly well, pushed it all the way while Ireland’s top mountain runner Kate Purcell (Raheny Shamrock AC) beat the time taking the women’s title. They were joined by thousands of runners taking on the 10 Mile in Phoenix Park.
Somba, the fit man on the Irish roads at the moment, followed up his 10k victory over Fingal with another impressive victory, but came home just seven seconds ahead of O’Sullivan Hourihan (51 :21), with Celbridge AC’s Martin Hoare (52:10) third on a sunny but windy morning.
“He busted me up the hill to the Wellington monument. I brought him back to the playgrounds but he was just too strong in the last three miles,” said O’Sullivan Hourihan (30) of Ballycotton.
He trains in the park while working there at the Ordnance Survey Office and he was one of Ireland’s top athletes at the World Orienteering Championships in Denmark last month. “I last ran 10 miles nine years ago, so I’m very happy. I knew if I was close to Peter I was fine and it’s perfect preparation for next month’s half marathon,” he said.
Purcell was particularly thrilled to win the women’s title in 59 minutes and 36 seconds, more than half a minute clear of Annadale’s Caitlyn Harvey (60:09) with Killorglin native Niamh Clifford (Donore Harriers) third in 60:20. happy. It’s a PB because I’ve never done 10 miles before. I can’t wait to get home and tell my family,” said the mother-of-two from Swords who helped Ireland win team bronze at the 2013 Mountain Running World Championships.
“I’ve run a marathon and a lot of half marathons, but a 10 mile had never been on my schedule so it was a great experience and a great springboard for next month’s half marathon” , she said.
